Tea time at The Peninsula – Paris

20 juillet 2015 § 2 Commentaires

The Peninsula Group opened last August their first European hotel in Paris after four years of careful restoration. It is located close by the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees, a dream location for anyone visiting the City of Lights. My friend and I were talking about how impressive the palace looked like and we finally decided to book for the Afternoon Tea. peninsula paris afternoon tea interior gold architecture lobby sugarsheet

You can choose between the Classic Peninsula Tea set or the Tea time by the pastry chef Julien Alvarez. I already tasted his creations at Bubo, a cake shop in Barcelona few years ago and I was curious to discover his work as a chef in a Palace. For the tea, there are the traditional green and black, but also the white one which is less common in France. White tea has the highest level of antioxidants and has as many health benefits as green tea. Afternoon tea Peninsula Paris sugarsheet Julien alvarez best Afternoon tea Peninsula Paris Lobby Sugarsheet Julien Alvarez pastry

Let’s talk about the pastries! M. Alvarez has chosen not to mix too much flavors and I really appreciated it. Among the selection of little pastries, my favorite was the decadent Chocolate mousse in the middle of the plate: so dense, creamy and light at the same time! I also enjoyed the Strawberry cake, as it is rare in Paris to find a bakery which does it by the book. I regretted the small size for this one. In the Classic Tea set chosen by my friend, there were scones: she usually does not like them but she changed her mind after trying the Peninsula version. I also took a bite and it was very different from the scones I have tried until now. Not dry at all, it had the same texture as the Levain Cookie in New York : crunchy at the edge, gooey inside. Butter, jam and cream were almost unnecessary.

The service was beyond expectation: our waiter Tristan was a real tea passionate and he took good care of us. We were able to try en avant-première a lime Ice Tea, called the Five o’clock which will be on the menu. We spent an unforgettable afternoon at the Peninsula, surrounded by moulds and rich wood panelling – details winking at the Belle Epoque era.
