This week : celebrating Chuseok in France and Korea Now! at les Arts Décoratifs

27 septembre 2015 § Poster un commentaire

During this week end is the celebration of the Eid for muslims and also Chuseok 추석 or Hangawi 한가위 for Koreans, which is a three day celebration for a good harvest. The date is chosen according to the lunar calendar and changes every year. Koreans living in the cities return to their grandparents’ house and take time to visit the tombs of their ancestors. Chuseok Songpyeun Sugarsheet autumn red bean sesame seeds

The symbolic food eaten during Chuseok is the « Songpyeun » 송편, a rice cake filled with red bean paste, sesame seeds, sweetened with honey. Chocolate did not existed yet, the red bean paste was an excellent substitute before chocolate was introduced by the Americans. Songpyeun has the shape of a full moon and is perfumed with pin needles while they are steamed. They can be lightly colored with natural tints such as blueberry or carrot. Chuseok Songpyeun Autumn Moon Harvest SugarsheetChuseok songpyeun Sugarsheet autumn gluten free vegan dessert korean

Next year Chuseok will be September 15th! I hope to be in South Korea to celebrate it with my family, I have not seen my cousins reunited all together for a while.

If you are interested in Korean culture, there is the exposition « KOREA NOW! Craft, design and fashion » held at les Arts Décoratifs until January 3rd, 2016. I have never seen so many beautiful korean pieces of pottery gathered in one place.

Gwangjang Market – Seoul

Gwangjang market is a traditional Korean market established since 1905. It is famous for Bindae-tteok (빈대떢), which has the shape of a pancake, made of mung beans and vegetables. The mung beans are freshly grounded in the stone grinder, then mixed with vegetables and fried. Makgeolli is the perfect drink to pair with this dish.

Eating in the middle of this indoor market among the hustle and bustle should be on your list of experience to have in Seoul!seoul south korea gwangjang market bindaetteok vegetarian travel pancakestone grinder seoul south korea gwangjang market travel food vegetarian mung beansbindaetteok seoul south korea food travel vegetariangwangjang market vegetarian food south korea seoul travelgwangjang market seoul south korea food bindaetteok travel vegetarian

Dessert spot : Okrumong / 옥루몽 – Seoul

Okrumong is a dessert spot specialized in red bean. The strawberry bingsoo was seasonal but the version with red bean is a classic. The secret of a good bingsoo relies on the red bean paste : the beans should be tender and firm. I can recognize when it is fresh beans or from cans because the last ones are generally too soft and sweet. okrumong best bingsoo seoul south korea dessert travel food okrumong seoul best bingsoo south korea travel food dessert cafebingsoo strawberry seoul south korea okrumong bingsoo travel food south korea best dessert

Okrumong is an excellent place for enjoying this ice shaved dessert. For those who may not be familiar to red bean paste, the taste is similar to chocolate! rice cake seoul okrumong south korea travel food dessert best best bingsoo seoul south korea dessert sugarsheet travel

You can also try rice cakes made of red beans. There are several locations across South Korea.

Alex and the Coffee at AND – Seoul

I read in a magazine that the owner of this cafe located in Hannam-dong prepared good ice coffee. Until now, the only experience of ice coffee I had were disappointing: just water, loads of ice cube but no taste of « coffee ». With spring and warm temperatures arriving in Seoul, it was the perfect timing to give a try. Alex and the coffee best seoul cold brew travel south korea itaewonAlex and the coffee itaewon best south korea seoulAlex and the coffee is also a restaurant, which I had not the opportunity to visit but their pastries were just amazing (on the picture the salted caramel brownie), if not the best I ever had in Seoul. They sell bottles of this cold drink if you want to take away. If you plan to go to Seoul this summer and you appreciate drinking good coffee, you now know where to go!

삼청동 맛집: 풍년 쌀 농산 떡볶이 / Where to eat Tteokbokki – Seoul

14 avril 2015 § 5 Commentaires

Tteok-bokki is a korean dish made of rice and red chili sauce – 고추장. It is the most widespread dish sold in food trucks and stalls as it is easy to prepare. A good Tteok-bokki should have a soft and chewy rice base and a sweet chili sauce which is not too spicy. After trying several addresses for finding the one, Ppoung-nyon Ssal Nong-san (풍년 쌀 농산) Tteok-bokki was the place which met all my expectations. It is like crepe in France: very easy to cook but only few places do it really well. seoul food spicy hot tteokbokki best sugarsheet vegetarian The fried one on a skewer was my favorite : crispy and chewy at the same time, with a spread of sweet red sauce. seoul south korea best dish food tteokbooki spicy hot korean The drink to have with Tteok-bokki is Shik-he (식혜) made of rice and brown sugar. It is closed on Monday, and if you have the possibility, avoid the week end because the waiting time can be very long. seoul dessert food travel south korea sugarsheet drink rice samcheong dong hanok seoul best food travel south korea korean seoul samcheong dong
