Korean Street Food at le Carreau du Temple – Paris

Until Sunday, will be held at Le Carreau du Temple a street food festival centered around Korean food with other food trucks as well. Korean food is not yet well known in France, maybe at the exception of the spicy kimchi and the BBQ. The Korean food stalls present here were promoting traditional korean dishes yet unfamiliar to Parisians, such as Tteokbokki, Hop-pang, or seafood Pajeon. The korean chef Pierre Sang was also there and had his own food stall. I tried his Kimchi lentil, not as spicy as I was expecting but strong enough for the Parisians trying Kfood for the first time. Finding an authentic restaurant is the biggest challenge when you are visiting Venice and its surroundings. By « authentic » I mean a place without overpriced dishes and aimed only for hungry tourists.

On the menu, typical italian dishes such as Spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), seafood plate and if available an excellent risotto. Despite the absence of any particular decor, I appreciated eating comfort food in a family run osteria after over indulging myself with gelati.

Duck and Waffle – London

Finally trying a restaurant with a view in London! Thanks to my friend who suggested we had breakfast at Duck and Waffle, it was one of the best surprise of the week end. You will reach the heights after taking a glass lift which will bring you to the 40th floor of the Heron Tower in a flash. I did not have high expectations on the food served in this kind of places: usually overpriced and average quality justified by the view. At Duck and Waffle, the British chef Daniel Doherty has succeeded to propose simple dishes with quality ingredients. Their specialty as its name indicates: waffles ! I was not in the mood for eating duck at 8am, neither my friend, so we took a Banana Brûlé waffle, with a delicious home made nutella topped with vanilla ice cream. A real decadent breakfast of Champions !

They have a full brunch menu, with Mimosa, Bloody Marys and Eggs cooked the way you desire. Sometimes it is ok to forget preconceptions and leave them in your cupboard to give a try to places like this one. Definitely the best breakfast experience I had so far!

Broken Biscuits – Paris

Do you remember when I was talking about the exquisite pastries at Honor Café, rue Saint Honoré? They are from Broken Biscuits a tiny little coffee/cake shop in the dead end street Passage Rochebrune. Cakes and pastries are freshly baked here everyday by Christine O’Sullivan who was a contestant in the Irish MasterChef.

The muffin carrot cake and the lemon pavot are beyond what you usually expect from these pastries, they are completely addictive! I don’t like lemon but Christine’s version is rich and mega moist. You can also have breakfast with a bowl of granola or lunch with quiches and sandwiches. I will try them for sure on my next visits!

If it is too far for you, you can always enjoy the pastries at Honor Café, Loustic & Fondation coffee shops. As it is a really tiny inside, try to avoid rush times.

August is the best month for visiting museums in Paris. It is very calm and there are always interesting exhibitions. Grace wrote an article recently about the young Chinese artist Tianzhuo Chen, whose works are currently shown at Palais de Tokyo. What awaits you is far from the usual calligraphies and delicate porcelain vase you expect from Asian art: Tianzhuo Chen is rather a contemporary artist, tackling various themes such as drugs, sex and rave universe with kitsch, pop and surprising installation. If this is too brutal for you, maybe the smoked glasses by the french artist Patrick Neu will please you more or the dark-aquatic installation by Celeste Boursier-Mougenot. The souvenir shop of Palais de Tokyo is certainly one of the best in Paris: they have a huge selection of edgy magazines and they sell items from the italian Toiletpaper. « Apéro » is the French equivalent of an afterwork with wine, cheese and ham. It is not a meal – rather a goûter for adult because of alcohol. Apéro is the best moment to discover typical french food: fromage (cheese), saucisson (ham) with a loaf of bread. If you want to have an apéro « dans les règles de l’art », I recommend you Inaro, a place where I bring visiting friends who enjoy drinking wine and are not afraid of strong cheese and spicy ham.
